Clario and University of Oxford Partner to Revolutionize Parkinson’s Disease Research with Opal® Wearable Sensors

Clario, a leading provider of endpoint data solutions for clinical trials, has partnered with the University of Oxford’s NeuroMetrology Lab, led by Professor Chrystalina Antoniades, to enhance Parkinson’s disease (PD) research using Clario’s Opal® wearable sensor system. The collaboration aims to improve the measurement of motor symptoms, track disease progression, and advance clinical trial endpoints with greater precision.

Transforming Parkinson’s Research

The Opal® system collects detailed movement data via single- or multi-sensor setups, enabling detection of subtle changes in gait, balance, and mobility, offering precision beyond traditional assessments. Professor Antoniades’ team has demonstrated that Opal sensors can predict fall risk in Parkinson’s patients with:

  • 92% accuracy up to two years in advance
  • 78% accuracy up to five years in advance

These predictive capabilities allow earlier intervention, improved disease management, and better evaluation of therapeutic efficacy in clinical trials.

Collaboration Goals

This phase of the partnership focuses on testing Opal’s usability and effectiveness in remote and real-world settings, leveraging Clario’s Mobilise-D Digital Mobility Outcomes. The project will integrate validated digital endpoints into Parkinson’s studies, enhancing regulatory acceptance and providing objective measures for drug development.

Ellen Street, Executive Vice President and GM of Digital Physiology at Clario, said:

"This collaboration embodies Clario’s mission to transform lives by unlocking better evidence. Combining Opal technology with the NeuroMetrology Lab’s expertise enables more precise monitoring of disease progression and drug effects in Parkinson’s patients."

Professor Antoniades added:

"We are excited to refine predictive models for fall risk and disease progression. Integrating objective, regulatory-approved measures into clinical trials will accelerate the development of optimized treatments for patients."

About Clario

Clario provides comprehensive endpoint data solutions for clinical trials, covering eCOA, cardiac, medical imaging, precision motion, and respiratory endpoints. With over 50 years of scientific expertise, Clario has supported more than 30,000 clinical trials in over 100 countries and contributed to over 70% of FDA and EMA new drug approvals since 2015.

About University of Oxford’s NeuroMetrology Lab

The NeuroMetrology Lab develops objective, quantitative tools to measure neurological function. By combining sensor technology, neurophysiology, and clinical neuroscience, the lab focuses on improving detection, monitoring, and treatment of movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, bridging research, clinical practice, and industry collaboration.
