C-CAMP Partners with UK’s GAMRIF to Tackle Antimicrobial Resistance
C-CAMP partners with UK’s GAMRIF which chips Rs. 56 crore to tackle AMR, invites Indian innovators
Overview
UK’s Global AMR Innovation Fund (GAMRIF) and Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) in India have partnered to foster the identification and development of world-class antimicrobial resistance (AMR) -focused innovative solutions to address environmental factors of AMR.
Focus on Developing Countries
The project has a special focus on addressing challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with local, contextual solutions. Through GAMRIF’s funding commitment of up to £5.1 million, or Rs. 56 crore over 3 years, the programme aims to support up to 15 innovative solutions.
About the Programmes
In the inaugural call for innovations, the programme has prioritised problems across different realms of detection, prevention, and treatment of the causal factors of AMR in the environment.
The programme will focus on mid- to late-stage development to accelerate promising innovative solutions, with a few to be supported for on-field validation and testing.
This is intended to scale-up these innovative solutions such that the gaps can be plugged in India, and also in LMICs, to curtail the spread of AMR in the environment, driving surveillance, monitoring, and guiding appropriate practices and policy.
Last month, an inter-sectoral stakeholders’ meeting was convened under this programme to identify areas in the environment - AMR nexus that can be addressed by innovative solutions.
These deliberations, and many others, have formed the basis of the identification of the prioritised problems in the inaugural call, that include, Innovative solutions to detect resistant microbes, resistant markers or antimicrobial traces in the environment.
Innovative Solutions
Innovative solutions to prevent the spread of potential causal factors of antimicrobial resistance in the environment.
This could be solutions to prevent the leaching of antibiotics into the environment, our water sources, our food and crops, and proposing solutions for effluent neutralisation and bioremediation.
Innovative solutions for neutralising or reducing the potential causal factors of AMR in the environment.
Words from CEO: C-CAMP
Dr. Taslimarif Saiyed, director-CEO, C-CAMP has said, the partnership with GAMRIF provides us a never-before opportunity to nurture startups across the whole value chain of solutions from idea identification to productisation, deployment and integration of innovation.
“Though this C-CAMP GAMRIF AMR Challenge in the environment, we are looking to push market-ready technologies in their last sprint to product and product to market”, he said.
British Acting High Commissioner to India has been an enabler and catalyser of this landmark GAMRIF-C-CAMP partnership.
From British Deputy High Commissioner (India)
Christina Scott, British Deputy High Commissioner to India, said: “UK’s Global AMR Innovation Fund and C-CAMP have announced their first call for Indian innovators to tackle this silent pandemic. It is wonderful that this initiative is offering £5 million funding over the next three years to support up to 15 innovative solutions in India. This is an important step towards curbing AMR’s impact in India.
